National Council for Civil Rights in Cuba (La Habana)
The National Council for Civil Rights in Cuba (NCCRC) is a non-profit, Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), with no political ideologies, with no defined religious creed, although by being a human rights organization, it respects all political civil ideologies and all religious creeds. This is the reason why it allows the participation of all people of good will. NCCRC’s function is one that is humanitarian, civil, transparent, and non-violent, and follows closely freedom of opinion and expression, peaceful association, and amnesty for all political prisoners and prisoners of conscience. It has the following as its goals:
- Gather all information possible about those who have disappeared and send them to the Human Rights Special ‘Rapporteur’ for - Continue and exhort the campaign in favor of freedom of the President and Founder of the National Council for Civil Rights in - Divulge the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Second Pact of Geneva on Political and Civil Rights, and work toward the fulfillment of the same. - Put pressure through national and international public opinion so that the - Develop a civic, peaceful struggle by means of legal channels to conquer the modification of the Penal Code, so that it responds to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights; denounce all violations that commit all functionaries of the regime. - Establish ties of friendship and cooperation with all society groups that believe in man as a social being, independent of his political, religious, or social affiliation. - Look for SOLIDARITY of all people of good faith and humanitarian, civil, charitable, and brotherly unions around the World so that they can support our peaceful struggle for the good of our people.
Our work is brought about with transparency, looking for our objective which is the solution for the complex Cuban problem, without violence or vengeance, but by understanding all parts involved in this difficult and suffered situation that now endures our country without exclusion of any participants; but at the same time with all those who with common outlook: “The democratization of Cuban Society, economic and social well-being for the country in a stable and durable manner.” Jorge Omar Lorenzo Pimienta is the current president of the organization, which is based in The former president, Fransisco Chaviano González has been serving an unjust prison sentence since 1994. Who is Francisco Chaviano? Francisco Chaviano is President of the National Council for Civil Rights (NCCR), an organization dedicated to promoting democratic practices, human rights, and an accounting of disappeared Cubans. He has been confined in isolation and deprived of basic medical care for long periods of time. In 2001, after being allowed to visit him for the first time in eight months, his wife reported that he is in very poor health. Francisco Chaviano has been denied adequate medical care, including treatment for a tumor, skin disease, ulcer, ear infection, and compromised immune system. Mr. Chaviano in a letter smuggled out of prison states: “For the last two months I have suffered from ear pain and they [prison authorities] have not taken me to see a specialist. They only give me some antibiotics that quickly run out, making the infection recur. Medical attention has been progressively lacking – for over three years I’ve been denied an electrocardiogram prescribed by doctors. Also I have a tumor that may be cancerous, but has not been removed.” What is his family seeking?
Francisco Chaviano is a prisoner of conscience, and we are seeking his immediate and unconditional release. Furthermore Chaviano has been denied medical care, including treatment for a possible cancerous tumor, and is suffering from a duodenal ulcer, arthritis, skin disease and an ear infection. Furthermore, after eight years in prison he is eligible for a conditional release under Cuban law.
