Pedro Luis Boitel National Civic Resistance Movement (Zona centro-oriental de Cuba)
The ‘Pedro Luis Boitel’ National Civic Resistance Movement (Movimiento Nacional de Resistencia Cívica 'Pedro Luis Boitel') was founded on January 24, 1997 on the 144th anniversary of the birth of the Apostol José Martí. The movement has is headquarters in Placetas, Villa Clara. Its fundamental objectives are the following: 1- To join families of political prisoners and other persons in the struggle for their rights, not only for political prisoners, but also for common prisoners whose rights are violated daily in 2- To ask for immediate, total, and unconditional amnesty for all political prisoners and prisoners of conscience, as well as give support to their families. 3- To watch over the fulfillment of the thirty articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in prisons and in the general population, and creating awareness through different means the violations of these rights. The Pedro Luis Boitel National Civic Resistance Movement is led by Bertha Antúnez Pernet. Bertha's brother, Jorge Luis Garcia Perez “Antúnez”, is a former political prisoner and prisoner of conscience, who served a 17 year sentence and was released in April of 2007.
