Cuban Youth Movement for Democracy Joins Young Venezuelan Students in Solidarity
By Nestor Rodríguez Lobaina

Havana, May 30, 2007.

We would like to send a message of solidarity to the young Venezuelan students who protested the closing of one of their national television channels. We join them in solidarity, especially in confronting President Hugo Chavez. The act of the Chavez government confirms the intention to move towards censorship and movement towards limiting the freedom of expression and press.

The Cuban Youth Movement for Democracy has a policy to join in solidarity with those in favor of democracy and new generations who defend their liberties and promote democracy in their respective countries. As we did in the nineties with the student movement that held protests in the Tianamen Plaza in China, we proclaimed ourselves in favor of freeing those student leaders imprisoned by their regime.

We have also recently supported student protests in France, where a democratic government, different than that of China, also made arbitrary decisions that were detrimental to future generations of youth in Paris.

We are saddened by many of these occurrences, but we reaffirm our solidarity with the Venezuelan students that have taken to the streets, with their countrymen and the opposition who are against the socially authoritative projects of the Chavez regime.
