Santiago de Cuba, October 11, 2006 – José Gabriel “Pepín” Ramón Castillo, a Cuban political prisoner who is currently on a hunger strike at the Boniato prison in Santiago de Cuba, is being denied his medications.

According to information provided by his wife, Blanca Rosa Echavarría, via telephone to the Cuban Democratic Directorate, “he continues without ingesting solid food, and has only had condensed milk that I have been bringing him and other liquids.” During her last visit to the prison, the officials conditioned the provisions she was bringing her husband, and Castillo responded by refusing to take the food and declared himself on a hunger strike.

Ramón Castillo, who was diagnosed with hepatic cirrhosis almost a year ago, is also being denied his medications. The medications that his wife has been taking to him have been returned to her.
