Montevideo. March 18, 2009. Uruguayan Youth Committee for Democracy in Cuba. Even as election campaigns are in full swing in Uruguay, the Uruguayan Youth Committee for Democracy in Cuba held two events two commemorate the crackdown known as the Cuban Black Spring.

On Sunday March 15, dozens of young Uruguayans demonstrated at the Cuban Embassy in Montevideo with photos of the Black Spring’s victims and distributed informational pamphlets before moving to the Embassy doorstep with signs reading “FREEDOM FOR CUBA NOW!!!” in red letters and “STRENGTH, ANTUNEZ” in blue.

On Monday March 16, the Committee held a conference at the Legislative Palace featuring a screening of personal testimony from victims of the Black Spring and an hour-long discussion on the perception of the current state of affairs in Cuba among young Uruguayans.

The Committee’s president, Martín Elgue called on the Uruguayan government to condemn the human rights violations committed in Cuba on a daily basis and stated that "we want to pay a debt inherited from preceding generations by ours. With their silence they became accomplices of the regime. We cry “Totalitarianism, dictatorship, and human rights violations: never again!”
